RMS PTA MEETING – Monday, September 17, 2007

meeting began at 9:35 a.m.

 

REPORT FROM PRINCIPAL:

-         smooth opening to school year

-         829 students in total (6th-268; 7th-281; 8th-283)

-         exciting curriculum developments:

- new  6th grade math textbook with online component (no textbooks at

 home)

- new computer lab opening in Oct. which will also serve as language lab

- core curriculum revised which now includes body image component (male and female) as a result of last year’s NoBody’s Perfect Workshop

- Nassau County Stephen Treglia, chief of cyber crimes unit will speak to students on internet safety (10/11 and 12)

- writing continues to be emphasized, writing folders contain 2 items from English and soc studies classes (beginning and end of each grade)

 

-         Staffing – all open positions filled, have 7 new staff members that are new to Roslyn, but experienced instructors and new head custodian, Fred Metzger

 

-         After School help - M/W/TH from 2:32 to 3:10; begins 9/17 for 7th and 8th grades and 9/19 for 6th grade due to open school night; library has extended hours until 4pm late bus

 

-         New drop off/ pick up procedures:

- AM – right turn only, DO NOT MAKE U-TURN onto Locust Lane,    police patrolling

- PM – cars not permitted to arrive for pick up until buses depart (2:45 p.m.) and right turn only, DO NOT MAKE U-TURN onto Locust Lane

     - pick-up during 9th period is discouraged by Administration

     - ABSOLUTELY no parking/standing is permitted in fire lanes

 

 

REPORT FROM CO-PRESIDENTS, NANCY GOLDMAN, WENDY LEVY AND NANCY ROMAGNA:

- No PAMS as it was eliminated; replaced by Connect Ed which will begin in Oct for parents that signed up; parents should continue to call main office when student is absent.

- Turf is scheduled to be completed for Oct. 13 homecoming game

- School Spirit Day is Friday, October 12, and all students are encouraged to wear school colors

- New Business:

- Hope to have open positions filled: Newsletter (2) , Adult Education (1) and School Affairs (2) although for School Affairs the only activity left is grade level BBQs at end of year

- Homecoming pushed back due to turf; related to this, RMS wants to be more involved and Mr. P asked whether PTA would purchase banner for RMS to use for homecoming weekend at RHS and other events throughout the year such as RMS graduation; RMS PTA VOTED AND APPROVED PURCHASE OF BANNER AT A COST OF $500-$1000

- Bulldog Boosters have requested that the RMS PTA purchase a Bulldog Brick which will form the entryway to the new HS turf field; RMS PTA VOTED AND APPROVED PURCHASE OF BULLDOG BRICK FOR $250

 

REPORT FROM TREASURER, AMY KATZ:

- Motion to approve 2007/2008 budget was made; RMS PTA APPROVED 2007/08 BUDGET WITH AMENDMENT TO CHANGE $1000 MISCELLANEOUS ENTRY TO $200 community service and $800 miscellaneous

- tax exempt card for Staples purchases is help by Amy for use by PTA

 

REPORTS FROM COMMITTEES:

 

Membership (Kathy Harnick and Lori Furnaro reported):

-         committee designed a great line this year and took orders for items including: under armour for boys, sweatshirts for girls, sports jackets, phone charms, blankets, pj’s, shorts and gym wear

-        

 

Fundraising (Susan Rich, Lisa Roberts and Lauren Weiss reported):

-         current projects include: $5 student directories available on Open School night, gift wrap packets that will be due early October and first bake sale on Tuesday, October 16

 

Bulldog Boosters (Yvette Greenwald reported):

-         meeting held on 9/10

-         “Spirit Day” will be held on Fri., Oct. 12 and all RMS students are encouraged to wear blue and white or their tem uniform to show their school spirit and promote all sports

-         Homecoming is on Sat., Oct. 13 which includes pancake breakfast for all students, parade, early soccer game and afternoon football game

-         RHS field is being turfed and expected to be completed for homecoming w/e

-         still need support to finish paying for the turf; new fundraising effort is Bulldog Brick which can be purchased in increments of $250

-         turf was partially underwritten by private sources

 

Special Events (Shari Reisner reported):

-         Book Event – Nov. 7,8 and 9, part of profits will be donated to RMS

 

FAST (Franci Berman reported):

-         FAST discount cards are available for $20 and they are orange this year; old cards (yellow) may be used thru 12/31/07

-         $ raised through sale of FAST cards goes directly to schools for technology investment/purchase of SMART boards

-         there is a need for the parents of children in the lower grades to participate

 

Community Service (Elayna Kaplan reported):

      -   this year’s Walk-a-thon is scheduled for Friday, October 12th (raindate October 26th.) The committee is meeting today with the GO an d Human

           Relations club advisors to identify a “cause” we will be fundraising for.

 

Programming (Carrie Gordon and Allison Godman reported):

-         Internet Safety

-         Hazing Workshop

 

RADA (Lesley Heller and Robin Rashbaum reported):

-         Oct.. 22-26 is Red Ribbon Week,  this year’s slogan “We know to say no!” will be displayed on the fence. Further details for the week’s activities are being finalized and will be announced at the next board meeting.

 

8th Grade Activities (Maria Wolfe, Tracey Bourhill and Susan Lefcort reported):

-         Magnets are being sold as a fundraiser for boat trip

 

Board of Education (Claudia Strobing reported):

-         web cast – pod cast

-         class size is becoming a concern for lower grades

 

CCPA (Suzy Litt reported):

-         incoming 6th graders’ test scores were late; Dan Brenner takes responsibility for that which resulted in schedule issues

-         BOCES data is currently being analyzed

-         successive declines in all grades’ scores

-         district-wide presentation will be made which will be notified by mail

-         6th grade curriculum is being re-written

 

Hospitality (Jenifer Gladstone and Pam Lustrin reported):

-         organized and set up welcome back breakfast for Sept 5 at 7 a.m. for staff; was much appreciated

 

Misc Comment:

6th grade- there is an issue during lunch with supervised activities which need more structure
